Caribbean Regional
Quick Facts
Caribbean Regional at a glance
The U.S. government often appropriates assistance by region instead of breaking it down by individual countries in order to allow for flexibility in funding and to address regional concerns. Caribbean Regional includes assistance appropriated as a lump sum to multiple countries in the region.
Since 2010, the majority of United States funding has been appropriated through a major funding package for the Caribbean region, called the Caribbean Basin Security Initiative (CBSI). Fifteen countries are included in CBSI: Antigua and Barbuda, The Bahamas, Barbados, Dominica, Dominican Republic, Grenada, Guyana, Haiti, Jamaica, St. Kitts and Nevis, Saint Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Suriname, and Trinidad and Tobago. Not all assistance to Caribbean Regional is considered to be “CBSI.” Development and health programs appropriated for Caribbean Regional are not a part of CBSI, nor are military and police aid programs in the Defense Department’s budget.
