In the presidential election on 3-5 December, President James Michel was officially re-elected, beating his closest rival by a mere 193 votes - a razor sharp margin even in a country with a population of just 90,000 people. The opposition, led by Wavel Ramkalawan, immediately called for a review, intimating that there had been vote rigging and irregularities.

Minister of the Interior, Basilio Monteiro, has denied that the former rebel movement Renamo is recruiting young Mozambicans into the ranks of its illegal militia. Speaking on Tuesday in the central city of Quelimane, and cited by the electronic paper “Diario de Zambezia”, Monteiro said talk of such recruitment was just “speculation by people of bad faith” who were trying to disturb public order and tranquillity.

Seychelles will host a regional military exercise coordinated by the U.S. Navy later this month. The exercise, named Cutlass Express 2016, will take place January 30 to February 6 and will include forces from Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mozambique and Tanzania, said Major Jean Attala from the Seychelles People Defence Forces, Monday.

The government of Uganda is intimidating and threatening journalists and activists in an effort to limit criticism of the government ahead of the Feb 18 presidential elections, Human Rights Watch (HRW) has said in a report released on Jan 11. In a 48-page report titled; "'Keep the People Uninformed': Pre-Election Threats to Free Expression and Association in Uganda," HRW says some journalists and activists are facing increased threats as the elections loom.
