The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations convened to review the current conflict in E. Congo and prospects for a peaceful resolution.  The witnesses concluded that there now exists a favorable environment for peace talks as a result of both international and domestic pressure.

The Senate Subcommittee on Africa met to discuss the current state of human rights in Zimbabwe and the likelihood of meaningful democratic reform.  They examined restrictions of basic rights in Zimbabwe, and concluded that credible elections would be a first step in mending ties.

The Senate Committee on Foreign Relations met to examine the evolving threat of global terrorism, and the imperative for new strategies to combat the dangers posed to the U.S.  This included a review of African extremist groups who are growing in prominence.
