I welcome the signing of a cessation of hostilities agreement in South Sudan. The people of South Sudan worked too long and fought too hard to have this young nation fall back into violence, and I hope that this agreement will be a critical first step to building a lasting peace.

"I remain deeply alarmed about the escalating violence in the Central African Republic (C.A.R.). In the last year, citizens of the C.A.R. have been the victims of an ever increasing level of ethno-religious violence, which started with armed groups attacking civilians, but has worsened as civilians have increasingly taken up arms against each other. Bangui—C.A.R’s capital--has fallen into a state of turmoil with half of the city’s inhabitants, some 513,000 people, being driven from their homes.
