NATO members must increase the alliance’s military capabilities, position additional forces in the Baltics and Eastern Europe, establish a maritime force in the Black Sea and bolster its presence in the Arctic, all to counter Russia’s growing military strength and increasingly belligerent behavior toward its neighbors, the Atlantic Council said in a new report.

Weeks before a key summit in Warsaw, Poland is pushing its allies to use some of NATO's planned new multinational forces to secure the Fulda Gap, a move experts say is aimed at rebalancing what Warsaw sees as a 'second class' status within the alliance.

Analysts say that Georgia can expect little progress regarding its aspirations to join the North Atlantic Treaty Organisation (NATO) at an upcoming July 8-9 summit in Warsaw. The alliance has previously promised that Georgia would eventually join its ranks, and Tbilisi has made considerable efforts to comply with all prerequisites.

The Moldovan opposition considers the intensification of military cooperation with the United States as a gross violation of the neutrality recorded in the basic law of the state. Amidst the disputes that arose over the efficiency of the missile defense system, Montenegro’s accession to NATO and Russia’s new military build-up, the new engagements of the South Caucasus states with NATO that are seemingly underway were somewhat overshadowed. Three rather interesting moves, linking NATO even more closely with the region, could lead to changing realities in the wider Black Sea region and inherently provoke Russia to be even more belligerent.

The biggest military exercise in eastern Europe since the Cold War kicked off in earnest Tuesday as roughly 2,000 NATO paratroopers were set to fill the skies over Poland. The operation, called Anakonda 2016, is billed as a Polish-led training exercise and will span roughly 10 days. More than 30,000 troops from 24 different countries, including non-NATO states such as Finland and Kosovo, are set to participate in a series of events spread across Poland. The exercise is designed to emulate a “joint defensive operation on a large scale,” according to a release by the U.S. Army.

Six weeks before a critical summit meeting aimed at bolstering NATO’s deterrence against a resurgent Russia, the alliance is facing a long list of challenges. The first is to find a country to lead the last of four military units to be deployed in Poland and the three Baltic nations. But that, analysts say, could be the least of its problems.
