U.S. Special Operations Forces will participate in the Flintlock training exercise in Africa later this month, the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM) announced in a statement. Approximately 1,700 Special Operation Forces from more than 30 nations are expected to participate in the exercise, which has been conducted annually since 2005.

Maritime forces from eastern Africa, western Indian Ocean island nations, Europe and the United States, as well as several international organizations began the fifth iteration of the multinational maritime exercise Cutlass Express on January 30. Cutlass Express 2016, sponsored by U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM), is designed to improve regional cooperation, maritime domain awareness (MDA) and information sharing practices to increase capabilities of participating nations to counter sea-based illicit activity.

The U.S. Military Sealift Command’s expeditionary fast transport vessel USNS Spearhead (T-EPF 1) arrived in Sekondi, Ghana, for a routine port visit on January 30. This serves as the first port for Spearhead in support of Africa Partnership Station (APS); the ship is scheduled to embark members of the host nationals who will work alongside U.S. Coast Guard Law Enforcement Detachment members for maritime security exercises.

Seychelles will host a regional military exercise coordinated by the U.S. Navy later this month. The exercise, named Cutlass Express 2016, will take place January 30 to February 6 and will include forces from Comoros, Kenya, Mauritius, Madagascar, Mozambique and Tanzania, said Major Jean Attala from the Seychelles People Defence Forces, Monday.

Brazil hosted UNITAS Atlantic 2015, a joint military training exercise for Navy members from various countries in the Americas. The Brazilian Navy was in charge of the event, and held the amphibious phase between November 15 - 24, in Rio de Janeiro, following the first phase held in Rio Grande do Sul, a few days earlier.
