Sudan’s presidential and parliamentary elections were held from 13 April, and lasted four days due to the low voter turnout. They are estimated to have cost as much as US$600 million and were closely overseen by the country’s omnipresent National Intelligence and Security Service.

This paper explores the changing power capabilities of Algeria, Egypt, Ethiopia, Nigeria, and South Africa (the ‘Big Five’) over the next 25 years. Of these countries, Ethiopia and Nigeria are forecast to increase their power capabilities, whereas Algeria, Egypt and South Africa are expected to stagnate or decline.

Implementing measures such as asset freezes and travel bans, however, calls for joint effort and active involvement from South Sudan’s neighbours, since most of the country’s elite have personal interests – including homes – in the region. The interests of the respective neighbouring countries might therefore shape or undermine the enforcement process.
