Speaking in Tallinn, Estonia, President Barack Obama earlier this month affirmed America's commitment to defend NATO allies in Eastern Europe. The reassurance was welcomed, particularly by the Baltic republics, which have been feeling the heat from Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Over the past week, Russian troops have wrested control of parts of southern Ukraine from government forces, expanding the territory under Russian-armed rebel control and opening a land bridge to Russian-occupied Crimea. The beheading of American journalist James Foley at the hands of the Islamic State of Iraq and Syria (also known as ISIS or ISIL) is a brutal reminder of the group’s threat not just in the Middle East, but also against Americans. To defeat this threat, the United States should expand the range of its airstrike campaign, increase the number of personnel deployed to Iraq, and empower its regional allies to roll-back ISIS’ territorial gains.
