Challenges to Democracy in the Western Hemisphere
Chairman Salmon on the hearing: “A liberalized economic system where citizens are empowered to innovate, pursue their dreams, and decide how best to provide for their families is the bestrecipe for strengthening democratic institutions and the rule of law in theWestern Hemisphere. This hearing will explore how and why we have seen an erosion of this democracy in Latin American countries such as Venezuela, Ecuador, Nicaragua, Bolivia and Argentina. We will be honored to hear from former Colombian President Alvaro Uribe and our panel of expert witnesses, who are uniquely qualified to discuss the state of democracy in our hemisphere and what can be done to encourage the opening of markets and opportunity and expansion of democratic principles.”
