Secretary Kerry announced yesterday that the United States plans to provide $5 million to promote justice and accountability in South Sudan, pending Congressional approval. Many South Sudanese have long urged that those responsible for the crimes that have been committed in South Sudan during the current, tragic conflict must be held accountable in order to break the cycle of violence and revenge and build a stable, lasting peace.

The United States express concern over the recent violence in and around Menaka, Timbuktu and Goundam, Mali. Administration called all parties to immediately cease hostilities and return to their previous positions in compliance with all applicable ceasefire agreements.

The United States expressed disapproval of the decision by Burundi’s ruling party, the National Council for the Defense of Democracy–Forces for the Defense of Democracy (CNDD-FDD), to disregard the term-limit provisions of the Arusha Agreement by naming President Pierre Nkurunziza as its candidate for a third presidential term.
