The U.S. State Department last week announced the inclusion of Boko Haram and its splinter group, Ansaru, in the list of groups designated as Foreign Terrorist Organisation (FTOs). It said the two Islamic sects have links to Al-Qaeda in the Islamic Maghreb (AQIM) and was responsible for “thousands of deaths in North-east and central Nigeria over the last several years, including targeted killings of civilians.”
